The Indian Mutiny of 1857
In May of 1857, sepoys (Indian armymen) in the British East India Company's army rose up against the British. The unrest spread to other army divisions and civilian towns across north and central India. By the time it was over, hundreds of thousands or even millions of people had been killed. The British home government had disbanded the British East India Company, taking direct colonial control. -
Government of India Act 1858
Indian Rebellion of 1857 urged British Government to pass this Act. To calm down the after effects of 1857 revolt, the Act of 1858 was introduced. -

Born at Porbandar, Kathiawad, son of Karamchand (Kaba) and Putlibai Gandhi. -

The Formation of the Indian National Congress
The Indian National Congress is the self-proclaimed largest and oldest democratic organization in the world. Since its inception in 1885, it has been responsible for many of the drastic changes in Indian politics. So much so that leaders like Mahatma Gandhi who rose out of it succeeded in not only seeing changes in their country but in the entire world -
Gandhi goes to South Africa
Gandhi sailed for South Africa to become lawyer for an Indian firm. He was met with a lot of racist remarks on his way there, and was even thrown out of the train for riding in first class. -

Formation of All-Indian Muslim League
The All-India Muslim League, a political organization that represented the interests of Indian Muslims, is formed. -
Gandhi is consecutively arrested and sentenced to imprisonment
Arrested three times in four days (at Palmford, Standerton, and Teakworth) and sentenced at Dundee to nine months' imprisonment; tried at Volksrust in second trial and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with his European co-workers, Polak and Kallenbach. Imprisoned in Volksrust jail for a few days and then taken to Bloemfontein in Orange Free State. -
WW1 Ends
End of the first World War. India starts acknowledging that they should have more independence and freedom. -
Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
JALLIANVALA BAGH MASSACRE, involved the killing of hundreds of unarmed, defenceless Indians by a senior British militry officer, took place on 13 April 1919 in the heart of Amritsar, the holiest city of the Sikhs, on a day sacred to them as the birth anniversary of the Khalsa. -

Gandhi publishes the Declaration of Independence of India. States laws and rules and equality in both religion and society. -
Salt March
n 1930, Gandhi set out to end the British salt monopoly. British claimed the sole right to produce and sell salt. They would collect money from the taxed sales on the salt to maintain their gov't in India. Gandhi saw the British salt monopoly as a negative aspect to Indians, since it showed a symbol of British oppression and burdened the poor. Indians were not allowed to touch the natural salt found in the sea, instead, they had to buy the salt sold by the government British rule was a "curse" -
Government of India Act of 1935
The Government of India Act 1935 was originally passed in August 1935 and is said to have been the longest (British) Act of Parliament ever enacted by that time. Because of its length, the Act was retroactively split by the Government of India. -
Gandhi Imprisoned in Aga Khan's Palace
Congress leaders are arrested; Gandhi is imprisoned in the Aga Khan's palace. -
"Quit India" Movement
Gandhi begins the nationwide "Quit India" movement. -

Muhammad Ali Jinnah/ Two States
Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the leader of the Muslim League. He insisted that Muslims would have their own state, called Pakistan. Britain became convinced to divide or partition the subcontinent when riots betweein Hindus and Muslims broke out. In 1947, British officials drew borders to create Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. \ -
Gandhi is killed
Mohandas Gandhi was horrified at the partition and violence that broke out in northern India. On the thirtieth of January of 1948, Gandhi was assasinated by a HIndu extremist. Even after his death, tensions between the two groups still existed.
