Finding Panama
The spanish explorer, Vasco Nunez de Balboa claimed the land for their King, Ferdinand. Spanish began to populate the area with the wealth they had stolen from the Incas. -

Real Audiencia de Panama was established with permission from Nicaragua. A real audiencia is a judicial district that functions as a court. Each audiencia had certain rules. -

English Raid
Sir Francis Drake leads a raid on Panama. Spanish had to becom allianc with them to keep things under control. They exchanged guaranteed freedom in exchange for military support. -
Ruin of Panama City
Henry Morgan, an admiral of the Royal Navy, burned the city of Panama, one of the most important citys in the Spanish Country at the time. -
Independace
New Granada finally gains freedom away from Spain. All region of former New Granada, including Panama, were technically free. -

The first Panama railroad is finished. It runs from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean. Shortened journey for the Gold Rush travelers. Total of $8 million used on construction. -

The United State's Senate supports construction of Panama Canal. US gives $40 million for the canal to be built in Panama raher than Nicaragua. Congress passes a bill alowing construction along the Isthmus. -

Panama Canal opens to the public. The length of the Canal reaches a total of 52 miles. At a total cost of $352 million and surprisingly under budget and schedule. -

The United States government started orginazation, Just Cause. Just Cause was necessary to safeguard the lives of U.S. citizens in Panama, defend democracy and human rights, combat drug trafficking, and secure the neutrality of the Canal. -
Canal Ownership
The Panama canal ownership is given from the United States of America to Panama by the treaty, Torrijos-Carter.
